Another short week this week! We started the second part of our Social Studies exploration of life in early Saskatchewan by joining Mrs. Walton in the library for our first two sessions of self-guided center learning about our First Nations people in Saskatchewan. The students are working in pairs, following directions and working together through a variety of self-guided activities at their own pace. It is an excellent way for students to direct their learning and to become independent researchers. We will continue working through these activities over the next few weeks.
This week we created an interesting science experiment. When we began our exploration of air, we created a KWL chart (K=what we already (think) we know), W=what we want to know, L=what we have learned). One of the wonders that came up was, is our air always clean? To answer this question, we created interesting contraptions out of hangers and double-sided tape to hang around the school to help us find out what might be lurking in the air. We will be examining our findings later next week. We also tied in some Language Arts by writing and editing a morning announcement in small groups to inform the school about our projects and to ask that they be left undisturbed. Three more groups will be sharing their announcement this coming week!
We also completed our chalk pastel fall drawings this week. We created outlines of a variety of fall symbols that ranged from ghosts to leaves using glue to create a solid line that would make our drawings "pop"! Then we filled them in using chalk pastels, blending colours to create beautiful shades of fall. Here are a couple of pictures of work in progress:
